Yes, it is two years since I launched the Sharing Culture website blog. Since then, I have uploaded around 500 blog postings.
Just as I started today's blog, my Yappa (sister) Miliwanga Wurrben called from Katherine in the Northern Territory to have a catch up. I thought this to be a clear sign that I needed to post a picture of Miliwanga. Here she is during my visit to Katherine last year, weaving a basket she made for me.
I have enjoyed writing this blog, reading about Aboriginal-related issues and posting the best content I can find. I've learnt so much. I have also made many beautiful Aboriginal friends and have learnt a lot about a wonderful peoples and culture.
The resilience that Aboriginal people have shown in the face of the onslaught of the colonisation process and the present day adversities is really quite amazing. I feel very honoured and privileged to be working alongside Aboriginal people. I know that my close colleague Michael Liu feels the same.
We have so many things that we would like to do, but sadly have been limited by being unable to raise funding for Sharing Culture and our proposed plans. I am really sorry that we cannot do more at this time, but I remain confident that things will change.
It's strange to think that I spent the first 25 years of my working life being a neuroscientist, working with chemicals in the brain. What a different world to that which I am in today!
Today, I work with Aboriginal people and their wellbeing. I see how important connection is to everyday life and to healing. Connection to family, other people, culture, country and spirituality. I see the importance of belonging, hope, and cultural pride. These are the key facilitators of healing.
I just wanted to finish by saying that I will be posting less on this blog for a while into the future. I'm really busy at the moment working on a film project with Mike, and on doing some writing. Both of these projects are related to Aboriginal people in Australia. I'm just so busy, it's difficult to find the time to post as regularly as I always have. At the same time, I know you'll like these other projects.
Thanks for reading this blog and please continue reading. There'll still be lots of goodies.
My very best wishes from Perth, Australia, to wherever you are. David
