Jan James: My Path to Connecting Aboriginal People

A key part of our 'Revel' project is to connect Revel Cooper's family - many have been fragmented by Australia's past assimilationist policies - and help them celebrate his life and artworks. This also means tracing back Revel's ancestry. For these purposes, we have linked up with Jan James, a quite remarkable lady who has been connecting Aboriginal people for nigh on forty years.

Jan James (formerly Goodacre) is a genealogist, historian and writer who has assembled an unrivalled collection of Aboriginal records and photographs. She has written 14 books, including ‘Forever Warriors’, which contains biographical details, and in most cases photographs, of all Western Australian Aboriginal servicemen in all conflicts.

After initially working on the Dictionaries of Western Australia 1829 - 1914 with Rica Erickson, Jan decided to record the lives of Aboriginal mothers. She started to develop her database which now contains the genealogies of many thousands of Aboriginal people and families. She collected over 7,000 photographs (mug shots) of Aboriginal people from police records.

Please check out our fascinating film clip. You can see other clips of Jan on our new Revel Cooper YouTube channel. It would be great if you subscribed to the channel (see button left side under the clip) and share with your friends. Many thanks.
